i could so see this happening to me. step out onto the "bank" make a few casts, get so focused on what i'm doing, not noticing the "bank" separating, then thinking well. here I am. it will end poorly, but might as well keep casting. what say you @nootkaroo2 ?

I thought fish targeted for fly fishing were only available when bugs are hatching, not in winter conditions...

lots of winter fishing. aquatic insects live several years, only spend a day or two as adults (hatch and egg laying = rising fish) midges hatch on sunny winter days, and bait fish patterns work.
a cool thing to do with in early early spring when lakes start to "ice out" is to cast a big fly out onto the ice and then drag it back towards the open water, fish will follow the fly from underneath the ice and grab it when it falls in.

of course there is winter steelheading (rainbow trout that go out to the ocean and return to the exact river or stream where they hatched) they spend the winter in the river, spawn and then head back to the salt. very chilly...
maybe the best "winter" fishing is in the Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico, permit, bonefish. snook and redfish in the back country of Florida is productive, then the tarpon show up...
