What is your greatest debt?
When we hear the word debt, our minds immediately jump to its negative connotations—credit cards, student loans, mortgages, and the crushing weight of financial obligations. It’s a word that triggers stress and a sense of being trapped, always owing something to someone. But what if we could redefine debt? What if, instead of seeing it purely as a burden, we saw it as an opportunity—a positive force that shapes who we are?
There exists a kind of debt that doesn’t weigh us down but lifts us up. It’s not measured in dollars or interest rates, nor does it come with a due date. It’s the debt we accumulate through the wisdom, kindness, and guidance of others. Every lesson learned, every piece of advice given, every moment someone took to help us grow adds to this invisible balance. We are, in many ways, the sum of these influences—our mentors, friends, family, even strangers who, knowingly or not, have helped shape our path.
This is the best kind of debt to carry, not because it needs to be repaid in the traditional sense, but because it calls to be paid forward.
