The hospitals are run by MBA’s and not Doctors?
PART 2 – The hospital Business- a personal experience.
In Part One I wrote about my personal experience of a Hospital when my 84-year-old father was admitted due to feeling weak. In short, he was hospitalized for 8 days with no issue being diagnosed from day 1 and how the hospital (In my opinion) made us keep our father hospitalized without anything diagnosed.
Here’s my 2nd experience which is exactly opposite of what happened in part 1 and still I feel scammed.
So, I met with a road accident and was in terrible pain in my hip area. I was taken to the hospital and X-rays were done.
The x-ray result showed I had a fracture in my hip and had to have a surgery immediately.
To be noted here is somehow I had missed paying the yearly Insurance premium for the past 2 years and there was no way the insurance company was going to pay for anything related to my hospitalization/ surgery.
I also had the experience with my father’s hospitalization that the hospital keeps you hospitalized for more days than needed.
I decided to play smart this time. I told the surgeon to give me an all-inclusive deal from the day of hospitalization till discharge. Post discharge, the medications, follow ups etc. was my expense.
We came to a reasonable amount (I still hadn’t admitted myself in the hospital and they knew there were chances I could go to another hospital)
So, the same evening I got hospitalized.
The staff was good and helpful. I have no complaints regarding the treatment in the hospital.
I got talking with the nurses and ward boys about how long it takes to be discharged. The information I got was anything between 6 days to 10 days. After that the patient has to rest for another 45 days and use the walker to go to the washroom etc. normally 2 days before the discharge they give you practice of using the walker so that you don’t put any pressure on your broken hip and/or don’t slip while walking after discharge.
I prepared myself for at least 6 days. I was in not worried about the money part as I had an all-inclusive deal.
The very next evening I had my surgery. They had put in 3 titanium screws in my hip to hold my fractured bone together. After the surgery I was very groggy and slept most of the time.
The very next morning at about 7 am the doctor walks in with a ward boy and some staff who had a hospital walker with them. The doctor told me to get up and try and use the walker. I was surprised as I had a surgery just 12 hours earlier. But with a lot of pain and help from the staff, I did get up and tried walking with the walker to the washroom.
Next the doctor gave me a bigger shock. He said by 10 am I will be discharged. I was taken aback.
How is this even possible? I’m still a bit groggy, I am in pain, I need medical attention but he is discharging me. I protested saying I won’t be able to take care of myself at home. And what of there is any emergency. They called the hospital senior and he bluntly told me, “The hospital has done everything they could do. Now there’s noting more for them to do”
Now I got it. They were doing this because of the lumpsum all-inclusive deal.
Damn these stone hearted people. They probably don’t even have a heart. Money means everything to them.
I protested again and demanded to see discharge papers of any other patient who has had the same surgery and had been discharged in 16 hours of his major surgery.
They allowed me to stay for one more day but when the bill came they charged me a little extra over and above the agreed amount saying normally the charges are more but we have given you a discount.
Bro, you should have mentioned all this before you were taking me in. But you didn’t, because you knew I would go to another hospital.
I was very angry but my brother calmed me down saying, “You can’t really escape the hospital fraud specially of there’s an emergency”
My Conclusion.
In my opinion, the hospitals are run by MBA’s and not doctors and the doctors have targets to meet.
Still wondering whether they still take an oath or is at just a myth.
