Guatemala ordered precautionary evacuations from communities around the erupting Fuego volcano after activity intensified, with lava, ash and pyroclastic flows reported on its slopes. 🌋
The disaster-management agency CONRED said El Porvenir and the hamlet of Las Lajitas were being evacuated, affecting about 50 families, or 250 people. Authorities declared an orange alert.
National Route 14 near the volcano was closed, and the Education Ministry suspended classes in nearby towns. 🚧🏫
Fuego is one of Guatemala’s most active volcanoes. Authorities were monitoring ashfall and the continuing eruption after the 2018 disaster, in which hundreds of people were killed and a village was destroyed.
