Need Help Analyzing Almost Having Gotten Into an Accident
Background: I ride a 2012 Victory high ball (No ABS) that is relatively well maintained. I recently moved from a lower income area in the Central part of Canada where the roads are very worn/not well maintained to a Western part of Canada where the roads are not as worn/maintained better.
Yesterday, I almost got into an accident twice in the EXACT same way. I am hoping for some help in analyzing what went wrong so this doesn't happen again.
In both situations I was going roughly the speed limit (50-60km/h) approaching a busy 4-way intersection. Both times there was a car in the oncoming lane waiting in the intersection to turn left (into my path). As I am approaching the intersection, the light turns yellow and I applied moderate to heavy pressure to both the front and back brake simultaneously. This caused me to slide with a bit of a wobble (which I thankfully was able to control) and enter the initial portion of the intersection before stopping, at which point the light turned red. I was able to walk/reverse my bike back in both instances to where I was intending on stopping. I noticed in both instances that I left skid marks on the 3x white lines that denote the stopping point and the pedestrian crosswalk (which were fat/wide and in very good/fresh condition).
This has never happened to be before in my previous city. Some initial thoughts I had:
\-Am I approaching these intersections too fast?
\-Am I hesitating between stopping and powering through the intersection?
\-Are the fresh white painted lines a factor in this?
