It was a cold November night. The air was sharp and frigid. I just had twenty minutes left of my shift as a Police Officer before I could go home to my warm house, wife, and kids.
Just as my shift was about to finish, I got called on scene for a domestic disturbance situation. There were reports of screaming and then a loud bang.
I was told this case was time sensitive.
Just as I'd done countless times, I hopped into my cruiser and careened toward the house in question.
After rolling up, I had to do a double take:
The house looked ancient, and not in a good way. The decrepit exterior told me the owners had not been so kind to the place in recent years, and thus humble abode had been void of any form of care.
Without another thought, I rolled out of the car and sprinted toward the doorstep. There, I was met with a cracked, rotting front door made of what looked like old maple wood.
I peered in through the only window and saw no light or sign that anyone was even inside.
I tried knocking but as I pounded on the aged door, my fist went right through the rotting wood.
"Fuck this," I whispered, before kicking the door in and announcing my presence at once.
"THIS IS THE POLICE, PLEASE SHOW YOURSELF AT ONCE, I AM ARMED," I shouted into the pitch-black darkness of the house.
I flicked on my flashlight and waved it around, plunging deeper into the void.
My flashlight revealed something concerning. There was no furniture in this house. Furthermore, there wasn't even any sign that people lived here at all.
Getting a really, really bad feeling, I turned to leave but stopped.
Behind me, blocking the door, was a tall, thick figure. It looked to me like a massive human who had eaten one too many Mcdonald's hamburgers.
Before I could react, a low, gruff voice penetrated the silence.
"I'm glad you came," the voice said. "It's been a long time since we've been able to find a meal."
Oh hell no. Whatever I had stumbled upon, I needed to remove myself immediately.
I stumbled backward in shock and raised my pistol immediately.
I had created a gap of at least 10 feet when my back hit something. Something squishy. Something warm.
Then I felt something hot and moist on my neck.
Before I could whip my head around, I was struck on the side of the head, hard, and everything went black at once.
I awoke some time later and sat in an impossibly dark room. As my eyes adjusted, I winced in pain and touched my head. My fingertips felt something warm and gooey, signaling that I had indeed been knocked out.
I struggled to orient myself and felt around for anything I could recognize. It took me a second to remember what had happened.
I reached down for my flashlight when I made a horrific discovery. I had been stripped down to my underwear and a tank top. My belt was gone, my tools were gone, and most important of all, my gun was gone.
My eyes had adjusted just enough to my surroundings to realize I was probably in a basement of sorts, due to the concrete flooring and pipes lining the walls.
After identifying the staircase, I tiptoed up each step, making painfully certain I was completely silent. I made it halfway up when I realized the door upstairs was already wide open.
There were two figures blocking my exit.
"Going somewhere?"
My heart sunk as the words penetrated deep into my chest like an arrow. I couldn't help but wonder if I was ever going to see my family again.
"Guys, you don't want to do this," I pleaded. There must be something we can work out."
My words were met with a deafening silence, sealing my fate at once.
I knew I had only one shot at surviving and it was a long one.
In the blink of an eye, I bolted up the stairs screaming my head off, and tried lowering my shoulder to push through these human tanks.
The men grabbed me and I prayed my plan would work.
Before I was subdued completely, I wrapped my arms around one of their legs and with all my might threw all three of us down the stairs using precise leverage and my bodyweight.
Surprisingly, my plan worked. As the very top step creaked, what soon followed were a series of loud, excruciating crashes, as the three of us came tumbling down the stairs until we all hit the bottom with a sickening thud.
I had landed on top of the men and came out unscathed, but fortunately, I couldn't say the same about the two pillows I had landed on.
The sickening thud I had heard was what I could only assume to be their heads, as their bodies remained still and dark pools of liquid started collecting around them.
Without another thought, I started making my way up the steps, when I froze.
At the top of the stairs was yet another, smaller figure. It only looked to be a boy.
Before I could react, the basement door slammed shut, followed by a series of locks being set.
I let out a yelp of frustration and fear as I pounded the floor.
I had been so close.
Then, an idea came to my mind. I crawled over to the pile of flesh and searched it for any tools that I had.
I couldn't find anything I had brought but as soon as I felt a square box, my heart skipped a beat.
I pulled it out and clicked "on."
It was my phone.
I immediately clicked call, ready to be done with this nightmare, when the worst-case scenario happened.
NO SIGNAL flashed across my screen and shot my heart yet again with an arrow of helplessness.
I threw my phone on the floor and sat in defeat. I was done.
I'd never see my wife again, I'd never get to tuck my daughter in, hear their warm laughs, or see their pretty faces. I was going to die in this basement.
I closed my eyes and hoped that death would come soon.
