And just like that, the petrol price in South Africa has gone UP again. With the ongoing oil crisis, it’s no surprise—but it still hits hard.
The only small relief? Government stepped in and reduced the petrol levy a bit… but let’s be honest, we still feel it at the pump.
On Friday, I topped up and paid R19.47 per liter
As of today (1 April 2026), the new petrol prices in South Africa are roughly sitting at:
Coastal (like Cape Town):
👉 Petrol 95: about R23.90 – R24.00 per litre
Inland (like Gauteng):
👉 Petrol 95: about R24.50 – R25.00 per litre

Petrol/gas is sold by the liter in SA? Just as in the UK. Sold by the gallon, in the USA.
ZAR 19.47 per litre is equivalent to USD 4.35 per gallon. Cheaper in Cape Town than in California where I have seen USD $6.06 per gallon 😱🫣

Wow, interesting, so slightly more than what we pay here. I count myself very fortunate, mostly church runs twice a week, so my petrol tank isn't crying too much...only the Northern Suburbs trips test it 😅

Good evening my friend, I don't buy gas for my car now. I ride an electric bike 🚴♂️. I was lucky to have managed to buy gas before the price went up.

I hear what you're saying, and there are definitely a lot of different views out there on what's really driving global events. For me, I try to focus on what i can actually see and experience day to day. At the end of the day, whatever the bigger picture may be, the reality is we're all just trying to manage the rising cost of living.

So am I to understand the price there only changes the first Wednesday of each month? Ours can (and lately often does) change daily. And we have no 'true' price, it can cost as much as $2 per gallon more in larger cities than it does in my small town...but I can also drive 80 km and buy it for 30 cents cheaper per gallon that I buy it here...really it is pretty stupid the way it is done here.

Yes, our petrol price is regulated and officially adjusted usually on the first Wednesday of the month, either up or down. However we do get a heads-up before the time👍

Being regulated does bring a bit of stability, you always know when the change is coming. However Government regulates petrol prices and sets a monthly maximum wholesale price for diesel, filling stations are free to determine their own pump prices, leading to price variations between stations.
Even before the price increase today, filling stations already increased their prices last Friday. My brother said they were restricted to 40 liters last week.
Something else I noticed, and consumers complained about it is that quite a few petrol stations suddenly had "sold out" signs just before the price increase. Can't say for sure but it does make you wonder if some held back stock to sell at the higher price. That's one downside, even in a regulated system, there are still ways people try to work around it.
