The most expensive part of my AWS setup wasn’t compute

What surprised me: compute was the cheapest part.

Most of the cost came from:

\- network primitives (NAT Gateway, load balancer)
\- data transfer
\- logging

It forced a rethink of the architecture: instead of optimising compute, I removed components entirely.

→ removed NAT
→ replaced ALB with API Gateway + VPC Link
→ simplified the network

Main takeaway: at small-to-mid scale, cloud costs are often dominated by the infrastructure \*around\* your compute.
