☢️ The IAEA says verification work in Syria has confirmed that former authorities under Bashar al-Assad built an undeclared nuclear reactor under construction at Deir ez-Zor, along with fuel-fabrication and fuel-storage facilities.
The site became known after Israel destroyed its main building in a 2007 airstrike. The IAEA had previously assessed that the building was very likely an undeclared reactor, but Syria said it was a non-nuclear military installation.
🔎 Inspectors visited several sites in August and said uncovered cooling infrastructure at Deir ez-Zor was consistent with a reactor. The agency said the former authorities failed to report nuclear material, facilities and activities required under Syria's safeguards agreement.
Syria's current authorities notified the IAEA in July of another previously undeclared location and invited cooperation. The agency verified about 73 tonnes of natural uranium metal there under containment and surveillance; it says further cooperation and verification are needed to resolve remaining safeguards questions.
