The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s 2026 Ebola outbreak has become the country’s deadliest on record, with 2,325 reported deaths and 4,945 confirmed infections as of 17 August. 🦠
The outbreak is caused by Bundibugyo virus, a less common cause of Ebola disease for which no vaccine or virus-specific treatment had been licensed. WHO declared the linked outbreaks in the DRC and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern on 17 May.
The reported death toll has surpassed the 2,299 deaths recorded in the DRC’s 2018–2020 Ebola outbreak. Officials and aid workers have cited late case detection, insecurity, weak health infrastructure and difficult access in affected areas as major barriers to containment.
Response efforts centre on testing, isolation and supportive care, contact tracing, infection prevention in health facilities, safe burials and community engagement. WHO has also emphasized cross-border preparedness because Ituri is a regional movement and trade hub. 🌍
