Opening synergies

Hi,

I'm currently looking for opening and defense combinations that have good synergy with each other.

By synergy I mean openings that complement each other well within a repertoir for example, by avoiding certain critical lines. I'm also interested in combinations that provide efficiency advantages in general.

Here are three examples to illustrate what I mean:

**1.**

If someone plays the **Classical Dutch Defence** as their main weapon against **1.d4**, it makes a lot of sense to pair it with the **French Defence** against **1.e4**. This allows Black to answer **1.d4** with **1...e6**, intending **...f5** only after **2.c4**. As a result, the **Staunton Gambit** is ruled out entirely.

That recommendation is one-sided. While I would recommend the French Defence to a Dutch Defence player, I wouldn't necessarily recommend the Dutch Defence to someone who enjoys playing the French.

**2.**

Now suppose someone enjoys playing the **Modern Benoni** against **1.d4**. Unfortunately, the **Taimanov Attack (7.f4)** is a very challenging line for Black.

One solution is to only enter the **Modern Benoni** when White's f-pawn is blocked. This is possible if Black also has the **Nimzo-Indian Defence** in their repertoire. If White avoids the Nimzo with, for example, **3.Nf3**, Black can respond with **...c5** and transpose into a Modern Benoni.

Anyone who already plays the Nimzo-Indian has to decide anyway what to play when White doesn't choose **Nc3**. The **QGD**, **QID**, and the **Modern Benoni** are all interesting options.

**3.**

I would also include the well-known combination of the **Caro-Kann Defence** and the **Slav Defence**. Not because they lead to similar types of positions. They certainly don't, but because they complement each other from a repertoire perspective.

For example, against **1.c4**, Black can play **1...c6** and often transpose into either the Caro-Kann or the Slav, depending on how White continues. Of course, this means you should be prepared to face the **(Accelerated) Panov-Botvinnik Attack**, but any Caro-Kann player should already be familiar with those structures anyway.

Can you think of any other opening combinations that work particularly well together? Feel free to give some deeper insight why you come to this conclusion.
