At least 92 people have died after a passenger ferry capsized on Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba on August 11, police said Monday. 🚤

Eight more bodies were recovered, raising the toll from 84 as search teams continued looking for victims. Police deployed four boats and more than 40 divers.

The ferry was authorized to carry 90 people, while earlier reports estimated as many as 153 passengers and crew were aboard. At least 18 children were among the dead.

The vessel was travelling from Kariba to rural and fishing communities where damaged roads and scarce public transport make boat travel important. President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the disaster exposed deficiencies requiring immediate action. 🕯️
