When looking for new guns, especially when you were starting your collection, how do you decide which one(s) to spend your money on?
I've always had an interest in firearms, but didn't really have the means and wasn't around them growing up. I'm at a point where I have some means and time, so I've been heading back to the range, took the family to a local gun show, joined a local shop, took my son to a gun safety class together, applied for my CWL, and even got my "I dont ever want to touch a gun" daughter asking ME if we can go to the range again.
While I own a couple pistols (9mm/.45), I'm not really in love with them. I'd like to get different styles of guns (pistol, shotgun, AR) to experience, learn, practice, and likely take classes with. I got to experience using a red dot for the first time recently, and now whatever I buy asbolutely has to support adding optics (my current pistols don't). Choosing between a clear view of iron sights (with glasses) vs a clear view of a target (without) is a choice I hate.
There's reviews and opinions from friends/co-workers on what they like, but nothing beats holding it in your hands to see how it feels, or better yet, actually shooting it. The shop I joined allows members to rent range guns for free, so I'll be able to shoot a couple models on my list. There are several they don't have, and a few I can't seem to find locally to even hold (especially when you start getting into the different variations of a particular model). Some of these seem to be highly regarded/recommended, so I'm hesitant to ignore them when trying to make a choice.. Example: The Glock 17/19 were recommended, but I liked the G45 mix of the two much more. If the CZ Shadow 2 is on my list, which of the variations of *that* one is right for me? I won't even begin to get into all of the different shotgun or AR15 choices/options...
So this takes me back to the question of how do you make intelligent choices when choosing a firearm if you don't have the opportunity to shoot it? Is it just FOMO and I'm overthinking it? Do you just pick it up, if if feels right, buy it and move on? #weapons source
