Question from a Palestinian Christian
I have a question. I’ve been hearing a lot lately that the Palestinian identity/nationality first emerged & gained power in order to fight against Zionism & the jewish state. I’ve seen people saying that the term ‘Palestinian’ wasn’t really popular till around the time of the creation of the state of Israel.
This is quite curious to me. I’ve always considered myself to be Palestinian, and my family is from Nazareth (dad’s side), and my mum is from Galilee. My DNA test shows I’m from North Palestine/South Lebanon, but I’m genetically closest to Lebanese Maronites (I’m guessing this is because Christian’s intermarry more closely and did not marry Arabs form the Peninsula or Muslims in general).
I’m curious about what you guys know regarding the Palestinian identity. Who were Palestinians before Zionism? What would my family have considered themselves, being from Nazareth & being some of the first Christian’s in the Levant. Before Israel, Zionism and the supposed politically driven national identity of ‘Palestinians’, who were the Christians of the Levant (specifically the ones from northern Israel)?
