I wanted AI to sit on top of my API not the other way around

I hadn't worked on a public project in a while because most of my free time was going into small personal tools.

One of those was a collection of APIs I used for things like expenses and movie tracking. When Custom GPT Actions became available, I connected the API to a GPT and ended up using it like this:

"Tea 15rs today morning"

"Lunch 100rs yesterday noon"

"Watched spiderman rating 9/10"

That led to an architectural idea I found more interesting than the actual UI:

\*\*Instead of putting AI inside my application, what if I put my application inside AI?\*\*

The AI became just another client of my API.

That worked reasonably well for my own use, but a friend wanted the same setup. I didn't want to expose my personal API collection, so I rebuilt it as a self-hostable application called \*\*Continuum\*\*.

The interesting parts of the project ended up being less about tracking expenses and more about the backend architecture:

\* The same authenticated API is used by the web application and external AI clients.

\* The API exposes an OpenAPI 3.1 schema that can be consumed by AI action/tooling.

\* User isolation is enforced through Firebase auth + Firestore security rules rather than maintaining a separate “AI user” system.

\* Sensitive fields are encrypted with AES-256-GCM before being persisted.

\* Audit telemetry is sent to a separate service rather than storing it in the application's own database.

\* Third-party integrations handle things like AniList, Trakt, OMDb and OpenLibrary.

\* Redis/in-memory caching sits in front of Firestore for frequently accessed data.

It also grew beyond the original use case into expenses, portfolios, subscriptions, watchlists and books.

The project is open source here:

Would love feedback, feature requests, or contributions. And if you find it useful, a ⭐ on GitHub would mean a lot.
