Skin And Soul

Chapter 4: The Veil Fractures
The reckoning arrived on a bleak, freezing Tuesday evening.
John and Elena were walking back from a local night market, carrying a small bag of pastries. As they turned into the secluded pedestrian alley leading to John's building, the air suddenly grew suffocatingly dense. The temperature plummeted, turning their breath into thick plumes of white mist. One by one, the overhead streetlights buzzed, turned a violent purple, and shattered.
From the absolute darkness, four towering figures stepped forward. Their skin was the color of old bone, their eyes burning like embers. They were Executioners of the High Council.
"Azazel," the lead fiend hissed, a sound like grinding stones that echoed directly in their minds. "Your treason is concluded. The Council demands your head, and the mortal’s soul will feed the pits."
John’s instincts took over instantly. Terror gripped him, but he still stepped squarely in front of Elena, pulling a small pocket knife from his jeans. "Elena, get behind me! Run to the main street!" he yelled, his knuckles white.
But Elena didn't run. She looked at John’s back—at the mortal man willing to fight hell itself with a pocket knife to keep her safe.
"John," she said, her voice dropping its soft, human cadence, taking on a resonant, terrifying depth. "Close your eyes."
"What—"
Before he could turn, a blinding flash of crimson and black energy erupted from her body. The sheer force of the demonic pressure blew John backward, knocking him hard against the brick wall.
When the smoke cleared, John’s breath caught in his throat. He scrambled backward on the pavement, his eyes wide with absolute horror.
Standing where Elena had been was a creature of mythic nightmare. She stood nearly seven feet tall, her skin a deep, midnight-indigo, laced with faint glowing veins of crimson. Massive, curved horns swept elegantly from her brow, and two enormous, feathered leathery wings unfurled from her back, scraping against the alley walls. In her right hand, a broadsword of pure, dark fire manifested, illuminating the alley in a hellish glow.
She didn't look back at him. She couldn't bear to see the revulsion in his eyes.
With a feral, blood-curdling battle cry, Azazel threw herself into the executioners.
The battle was catastrophic. Azazel fought with a desperate, savage fury, driven by the absolute knowledge that if she fell, John would die. She parried a cursed spear, spun, and cleaved the first executioner completely in half, her fiery blade leaving a trail of ash. But the remaining three swarmed her.
A jagged blade pierced her left wing; another tore deeply into her shoulder. Black, smoking blood spilled onto the asphalt, hissing as it touched the ground. Azazel roared in agony, the sound vibrating the windows of the surrounding buildings.
Weakened by her weeks spent in human form, her defenses were failing. A heavy blow sent her crashing to her knees. The lead executioner raised a massive executioner's axe, aiming for her throat.
 No, she thought. Not him.
Channeling every remaining drop of her immortal essence, Azazel let out a seismic wave of hellfire from her core. The blast was controlled, a wall of pure destructive energy that swept forward, bypassing John entirely but engulfing the remaining executioners. They didn't even have time to scream before they were instantly vaporized into heaps of gray dust.
The alley fell dead silent, save for the crackle of fading embers.
