Have read it online and wanted to share it with you friends.
Life of an auto driver in Mumbai, India
Yesterday night, we had gone out for dinner in Bandra. On our way back, we hailed an auto. The auto driver refused. We started to look elsewhere. He turned around and saw me standing with a lady late in the night and signalled us to board his auto.
“Sir, I was actually planning to have my dinner. Therefore I refused.”
“No problem. But thanks for being considerate.”
“My food is packed here inside this box and I also have cold water just filled up. I will drop you and eat.”
“But its very late now. You should eat early. Don’t you feel hungry?”
“Chalta hai.”
We reached Hill Road. I asked,
“Where do you stay?”
“Lal Mitti (Bandra Reclamation slums).”
“That’s good. You can go home and have dinner.”
“That’s not my home.”
“So where is your home?”
“I am from Darbhanga in Bihar.”
“I mean your home in Mumbai.”
“I don’t have a home in Mumbai.”
“I meant your rented home.”
“No Sir, I don’t even have a rented home.”
“So what about Lal Mitti?”
“That belongs to my friends from Darbhanga. 10 of them live in a small 10/10 room and sleep in shifts.”
“And you? Where do you sleep?”
“I sleep in this auto - where you are sitting.”
“What do you mean? Why don’t you sleep in Lal Mitti?”
“Because I can’t afford the rent. I go there to take a bath, keep my belongings and sometimes eat food. Rest of the time, I stay in my auto.”
“Are you telling me the truth?”
As we were moving, the guy showed me parked autos on the roads with auto drivers sleeping in the backseat. I had seen this sight a million times in my life.
“You see those guys sleeping? They are all like me. They don’t have a house in Mumbai. They live in their autos.”
“What kind of life is this?”
“Oh, its not a bad life. I am happy. I save around 7-8K per month extra, which I sent back home.”
We reached the destination. I said,
“Bhai, I am privileged to meet you and see you happy despite of all the problems. Please eat your dinner in peace.”
Next time you see auto drivers sleeping in their vehicles, remember this story. That is their home.
