Extremely high electric bill
I just moved into a new apartment with my partner and we got our first electric bill for the first 23 days. It came out to be around $600. We live in a one bedroom but two floor apartment, ~1,300 sq ft. Everything, including heat is ran by electricity. We are in Cleveland, OH and have had the heat on around 70 degrees. I have talked to people in the area who have 4,000 sq ft homes and their bill doesn’t exceed $400. We have gone back and forth with the electric company and have done our own meter readings and according to our meter, we are averaging 140 kWh a day which just seems insane. We have never had this issue before but the electric company is certain this is normal for our unit during the winter as previous tenants have paid around the same. Our property manager is very surprised and said no one has complained about this high of a bill before. We asked him to inspect our furnace and water heater to make sure it’s not overusing electricity unnecessarily. Is there anything else we should be checking/doing differently? Could this really be a realistic price for our unit? It just seems so astronomical. It’s 1/3 of our entire rent. Any advice is very appreciated.
