Ofcom has opened an investigation into Aylo, the owner of Pornhub, over whether its age-verification system effectively prevents children from accessing pornography. 🔎
The regulator said Pornhub introduced a process for some users that relies on Apple as a third party. Ofcom is examining Aylo’s implementation, due diligence and testing, not Apple’s age checks. 📱
Under the UK Online Safety Act, services allowing pornography must use highly effective age assurance so children do not normally encounter that material. Providers remain responsible for the effectiveness of a process even when a vendor is involved.
The investigation is not a finding that Aylo has broken the law. If Ofcom ultimately finds non-compliance, it can impose penalties of up to £18 million or 10% of qualifying worldwide revenue, whichever is higher. ⚖️
