A love letter to New Yorkers from a Canadian marathoner.

You already know you live in the greatest city in the world, so I won’t repeat the obvious…but damn do you put on a marathon and make the world feel so welcomed and loved.

Everything about the city shone before, during and after the run. If you’ll indulge me, I’d like to give you a few of my highlights.

First – I had the opportunity to run thanks to a great local charity – the Alzheimer’s’ Drug Discovery Foundation. They treated the fundraising team incredibly well and more importantly, supported us throughout the lead-up to the race, on race day and beyond. And they weren’t alone – so many charities were represented and on display – each one doing important work to help literally millions of people. It’s a great foundation for the event and shouldn’t be overlooked.

The New York Road Runners also deserve a shoutout for the unimaginable logistics of getting all the runners and volunteers to Staten Island before the crack of dawn. Cops and bus drivers, and people holding signs and directing throngs of anxious runners...absolutely incredible. And the course volunteers taking care of everything…I saw a runner go down hard on the Queensboro bridge and before I knew it he had help from a course official with medical staff and an ambulance not far behind. And the finish line…you’d think I’d won the whole thing by the way I was applauded.

Now to you – the wild, manic denizens of NYC – hanging out of your windows, sipping your brunch beers, holding that speaker above your head, or banging on your drum kit. Fucking bless you. You made us feel like gods. Brooklyn represented. Queen’s packed those couple of miles. 1st Ave was off the hook loud. The Bronx might have had a bit of a piss smell…but damn did they bring the party (special mention of those dudes with the giant drums and drumsticks like logs) and everyone who lined 5th Ave, then through the park to the finish line – you sadist bastards seeing us in our pain cave, almost taunting us to keep moving through those grueling miles. I love you.

And after the run, it didn’t end. Because there were so many people out for the race, I ended up walking 30 blocks back to my hotel (no shout-out to the MTA – they sucked on race day)…but every dozen feet or so someone congratulated me. And even the next day – people were buzzing and incredibly open.

TL:DR – New York, you are amazing and you were at your absolute best last week. Thank you!
