Hairstyle as African students Students in Ivory Coast have…

Hairstyle as African students

Students in Ivory Coast have started a petition demanding the right to keep their hair. As an Ivorian, I went through the entire school system there, from primary school to high school, before leaving the country.
This rule applies to both boys and girls. Girls are only allowed to keep their natural hair once they reach high school.
We were always told to cut our hair extremely short. Even when your hair was already very short, teachers would still say, *“If scissors can go through it, it can be cut.”* That was something we heard all the time. I experienced it too, although they never had to force me because I always kept my hair as short as they expected.
It wasn’t until I moved abroad and saw other people my age wearing their hair naturally and trying different hairstyles that my relationship with my own hair began to change. I started taking care of it and appreciating it instead of seeing it as something that always had to be cut.
Looking back, I think this constant pressure made me start hating my own hair. I don’t think I’m the only one who feels that way.

What do you guys think?
