London’s National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery has reported the first live AI-assisted operation to remove a brain tumour. 🧠
The May operation used a clinical-trial system that analysed the surgical camera feed in real time and highlighted nerves and blood vessels near an 11-mm pituitary tumour. Surgeons remained in control throughout.
The patient, Rhys Hibbert, had worsening vision and hormonal symptoms and faced a risk of blindness without surgery. He recovered after the procedure and later returned to work, according to UCLH and The Guardian. 👁️
The result differs from AI that evaluates scans before an operation: it tested live assistance during surgery. It is an early clinical case, so broader trial evidence will be needed to establish safety and performance across procedures.
