Frankenstein I just re-read for the first time since…

Frankenstein

I just re-read for the first time since University (20 plus years). Do people view Victor as the tragic hero? His fatal flaw is clearly his ambition to create the monster but in doing so he brings to life this poor creature driven to mad cruelty because of society's rejection. Both Victor and the monster evoke sympathy from the reader. Victor seems to be a victim by his own hand, but the creature didn't ask for anything but love and companionship. Are we then to view the creature as the tragic hero? One who started off curious, loving, and in awe of humanity, but to be rejected most cruelly by those he loved. I felt so much pity for both characters throughout. The closing decision by the monster is so poignant and melancholic. Shelley really showed her skill at creating complex characters! I would love to hear what others think.
