Hurricane Lowell passed west of Hawaii’s main islands, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain and dangerous surf to Kauai, Niʻihau and Oahu. 🌧️
On Kauai, downed trees and power lines caused widespread outages; the island utility said nearly all of its roughly 35,000 members lost power. Flooding and debris made some roads impassable, while crews began clearing damage.
The storm’s centre did not make landfall, but its broad wind and rain field produced serious impacts. Governor Josh Green said one man died on Oahu after a tree struck his tent.
Officials were continuing to assess damage as Lowell moved away. Emergency closures had covered state and county offices, public schools and selected University of Hawaii campuses on Oahu and in Kauai County. ⚠️
