What are the most specific pieces/moments of literature that have stuck with you/actually traumatised for the rest of your life?
For me there are only two that hit me so hard it affected me physically in real life, and I don't care if you call me a normie, but it's how I feel:
* **House of Leaves** \- the Backwards Message: Decoding the message from the narrator's mother in real time, and I did it literally when it was a dark rainy night in a big empty house, in a deeply traumatic and hard time in my life, so her message hit so fucking hard, like I actually got chills reading it, and I distinctly remember getting actual fucking chills reading it and feelng scared and paranoid when I read it IRL, no other piece of fiction has made me feel as uncomfortable and unsettled IRL. House of Leaves was already one of the most unique and heavy-hitting pieces of lit I'd ever read but this specific "bonus chapter" elevated it even higher in the worst fucking way possible. I sat in my room and didn't want to leave it all night. Absolutely unhinged piece of lit. Being deeply emotionally disturbed when I read it in 2022 was not a good idea either. I was also unhinged at the time so it was a TERRIBLE idea. Amazing piece of fiction though. Damn, what a masterpiece. * **Wind-Up Bird Chronicle** \- THAT scene: You know the fucking scene. If you've read the book, you know it. Yeah, it goes without saying. Just vile. I have been legitimately so traumatised by this scene that even 12 years later I still look at paper cuts I get and think "damn bro remember that scene in Wind-Up Bird Chronicle? Imagine that!" This scene fucked me up so bad that it at least partially caused me to turn away from a medical career lol. I read this book WAY too young, trust me. I just........ did not expect it. I just cannot look at any type of injury on skin without thinking of it. What the FUCK was Murakami thinking when he wrote that? I can still picture it precisely 12 years later! Just utterly disgusting and unhinged. #entertainment source
