5 things I wish someone told me before I bought my first Kayak

Kayak Shopping: the Before, During, and After You have the thought, “you know what would be cool? A kayak!”

The research begins innocently enough but quickly becomes its own unique hell. I learned some hard lessons the past month of buying a kayak, so in the hope you save yourself the same, I give you a few more thoughts on how this is going to go.

Your kayak is not intended for every kind of water Most “all-around” models compromise: “well it works on calm water pretty good” is likely the only honest answer from the vendor.

Weight is sooooooooo much more important than you anticipate If your kayak can’t be easily transported by one human from your car to the launch point and then from the launch to where its going to live, its a weekend only endeavor and frankly, its already the weekend and you could be relaxing instead of muscling.

Where will you put the sucker??? Before you hit add to cart… visualize (in actual, real-time, mental space) the storage. This is almost never discussed sufficiently by the newbie kayak purchaser, myself included.

Cheap is tempting and Dangerous. As soon as you realize how expensive good kayaks are, the cheap options jump out at you. I fell down a loopp of Alibaba reviews and found a lot of “floating reviews” that might not fully reflect the functionality of the cheap kayak.

Seat design and stability > speed Unless you’re competing in the race to your lake house (and there isn’t one), how comfy and stable your kayak is will make the difference between spending all day on the water, versus a 3-hour adventure you would later choose to forget.

Anyway. Still love kayaking… just with the right kayak now and it turns out I get why people make the, "It’s the right kayak" pronouncements.
