What are the strangest novels that you've actually been excited to read?
I have encountered many books over the years where there is something structurally crazy or conceptually bizarre going on which have failed to excite me in the actual reading of them. I guess that is a risk of throwing away conventional ideas about plot and character. However, recently I've read a few novels in this vein that really do it for me, make me turn pages despite the lack of standard structure. Examples:
* *If on a Winter's Night a Traveler* by Italo Calvino * *Naked Lunch* by William Burroughs * *Pale Fire* by Vladimir Nabokov
Somehow these books escape the swamps of wankery (at least for me), and I'm trying to figure out why. What makes a book such as this work for you, or maybe doesn't? Can you think of some other tasty examples? Bonus points for female authors, I've seen a lot of recommendations based on these for other surreal dude books, which is fine but it is also nice to mix it up :) Thank you!!! #entertainment
