I live in a building where one of the apartments is being rented out on Airbnb by someone who is actually a tenant himself. As far as I know, this has been going on since around February 2025.
Whenever Airbnb guests are here, our building basically turns into a hotel. There is often loud music or TV late at night, people are loud on the balcony, and there are constantly new strangers coming and going. I no longer feel completely comfortable in my own home or even sitting on my own balcony.
There have also been damages in the building. The bicycle rack has been damaged, walls in the stairwell have been scratched, and we are the ones who have to live with these problems. Even the apartment owners have to pay for repairs and damage.
Our service charges are getting more expensive every year too. Water and electricity consumption have gone through the roof. The Airbnb guests use the water, electricity and garbage facilities, while the rest of us end up paying for the consequences through our running costs.
And this is what really bothers me: I am not someone who has a lot of money. I have to think twice about every euro I spend. So please, if you use Airbnb, take a moment to think about where your money is going and who is paying the hidden costs.
The person renting out the apartment is making money from the guests, while my neighbors and I are dealing with the noise, damage, extra costs and everything else that comes with it.
And at the same time, this could be a normal home for someone who actually needs a place to live.
I am not saying every Airbnb guest knows about these consequences. But I do wish people would think about them before booking. There are real people living in these buildings who have to deal with what happens after the guests leave.
Update:
Found out as well, that in our appartment complex containing of 24 appartments, two Indian men bought an appartment a few years, ago and is also renting it out to indian students. Only 2 people have been registered for the appartment but 4-5 students live there and I always wondered why so many women were coming and going with their backpacks and suitcases. Seems to be a service that they offer, they are dropped off by a big van and circa 6 months, later, they are picked up, again from a big van(?) #local source
