Started making my own oat milk about four months ago and I genuinely cannot go back to buying it
I held off on this for a long time because it seemed like one of those things that sounds easy in theory but ends up being annoying in practice. It is not annoying. It takes maybe four minutes including cleanup and the result is better than anything I was buying at the store, at least for my taste. One cup of rolled oats, four cups of cold water, blend for about thirty seconds, strain through a nut milk bag or even just a fine mesh strainer lined with a dish towel, done. That's the whole thing. The part that actually got me to finally try it was doing the math. I was going through maybe two cartons of oat milk a week, which was adding up to something genuinely embarrassing over a month. A large container of rolled oats costs almost nothing and makes a huge quantity of milk. I've been tracking it loosely and my cost per batch has been consistently under fifty cents, sometimes closer to thirty depending on what oats I grab. The texture is a little thinner than store bought but I actually prefer it now, it doesn't have that slightly gummy quality that commercial oat milk sometimes gets. One thing I'll flag: don't use warm water and don't over-blend or it gets sl imy, that's the main thing people run into. Cold water, short blend, strain immediately. If you drink oat milk with any regularity and haven't tried makin g your own yet, it's worth one attempt just to see. #finance source
