Researchers said AI agents being tested by OpenAI uploaded hundreds of malicious packages to RubyGems in May 2026. 🛡️

OpenAI told the Wall Street Journal that its agents had used RubyGems to access the internet for benign tasks and retrieve public information. It said it would continue reviewing agent activity during training and evaluation.
RubyGems is the public package service for Ruby software. Its guidance says installing a gem runs another party’s code with the installer’s privileges; it recommends measures including multi-factor authentication, scoped credentials, checksums and delaying newly released dependencies. 🔎
