The sequel to the 2000 blockbuster Gladiator , which starred Russell Crowe and won five Academy Awards, Gladiator II is set several decades after the original. The story centers on Lucius (Paul Mescal), the grandson of former Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius and the now-adult son of Emperor Commodus. Living in Numidia with his family, Lucius finds himself in slavery following an invasion led by Roman general Marcus Acacius. Drawing inspiration from Maximus, the hero of the original film, Lucius competes as a gladiator in brutal arena battles.
