I think I am in way over my head reading Middlemarch. For context, english is not my first language but I had no problems reading Jane Austen and with Charlotte Brontë I only struggled occasionaly with some landscape descriptions. So I thought I would be fine reading Middlemarch in its original language but it has proven to be so much more difficult.
Its not only the vocabulary that I'm lacking, its also George Elliot's literary voice that I struggle with. I'm more than two hundred pages in and I still find myself having trouble identifying when she is being serious or ironic or switching between the two.
The book has beautifull passages and is at times very gripping but then, out of nowhere, it turns into kind of a slog?! I've noticed that if I sit down and read 50 pages in a row I seem to start to immerse myself in her writting style. But if I stop and start again in the next day, its like that proggress has been lost.
Should I stop or continue? Has a similar situation happened to you with this or another book? #entertainment source
