"IMO: we need a sticky page or something for "How to make things BIFL
We should have a Sticky thread or a Wiki page that talks about how to \*maintain\* the most commonly asked about items here.
We have plenty of brand recommendation but no maintenance suggestions, whether it be skills (how to sharpen a knife, how to clean a pot or pwn properly), quick tips (storage, cleaning, things like don't put your knifes in the dishwasher, don't let them especially if they have wood handles, or to just replace the insoles not the whole shoe), or something else.
\* Shoes (replace the insoles, store properly in a cool/dry place not in the sun)
\* Socks (dont walk straight socks on carpet or floors, wear some slides or crocks or whatever indoor slippers you want)
\* Knives and scissors: buy quality and learn how to sharpen them and they will last forever. Scissors can also need to be tightened from time to time using a wrench. If you learn to sharpen a good steel knife or steel scissors, in the end it wont matter if you paid 300 or 800 dollars. Don't put them in the dishwasher don't let them soak in water, especially acidic and soapy water.
\* Pots and pans: there are plenty of options and opinions...but in the end if you just use gentle blue scrubbies with a gentle soap. Learn how to season a pan properly. Ceramic can last a very long.
\* Maybe some sort of "most request & recommended" type list for things wiuod be helpful for people? Just a thought.
I have other ideas but do not have the time to dig into more. I would love for this thread to gain traction and for others to provide recommendations on items.
I personally am focused on maintenance vs BIFL "out of the box", because nothing ia BIFL if **you** dont very few things are BIFL nowadays *if you don't take care of them*... It is cool to have a 30 year old oven or whatever but they were got in a totally different era of manufacturing.
I just suggest we have some sort of "common tips" section for maintaining your, not BIFL items, but your "very long lasting" items...
