Former Syrian prison official Samir Ousman al-Sheikh was…

Former Syrian prison official Samir Ousman al-Sheikh was sentenced in Los Angeles to 60 years in prison after a federal jury convicted him of torture-related offenses and immigration fraud. ⚖️

The convictions stemmed from his leadership of Adra Prison near Damascus between about 2005 and 2008, when prosecutors said detainees were sent to an underground Punishment Wing known as Wing 13.

At trial, former prisoners described beatings, suspension from ceiling pipes and a device that bent detainees at the waist. The jury convicted al-Sheikh in March on three torture counts, conspiracy to commit torture and two immigration-fraud counts.

The case reached the United States after al-Sheikh entered the country in 2020 and later sought citizenship, according to prosecutors. He was detained at Los Angeles International Airport in July 2024. 🛬

The Associated Press reported that his lawyers said they would appeal. The sentence follows testimony from former inmates and witnesses about abuses at the prison under the Assad government.
