🌧️ Tropical Storm Lala moved west of Hawaiʻi on Monday…

🌧️ Tropical Storm Lala moved west of Hawaiʻi on Monday after flooding and wind damage battered the islands, particularly the Big Island, despite the storm never making landfall.

The system had reached Category 1 hurricane strength on Saturday before weakening Sunday. Its nearshore track still brought extreme rain and strong winds: Laupāhoehoe recorded 43.54 inches of rain, while Mauna Kea registered a 140 mph gust.

🏠 Authorities said flooding swept about 100 homes from their foundations on the Big Island. More than 200,000 homes and businesses lost power at one point, and damage to roads and small bridges complicated access to some communities and hospitals.

⚠️ Cleanup began as coastal watches and warnings ended, though dangerous surf, rip currents and a residual landslide risk remained. Lala was forecast to strengthen again over open water, away from land, later in the week.
