The Life of Pi - Afterthoughts
I just finished reading *The Life Of Pi*, written by Yann Martel, and I wanted to share my thoughts about it. What I have seen is that many people don't like it, either for its ending or the way the author presents himself. I myself liked it quite a lot, but for different reasons.
The first thing was that I really enjoyed the beginning. The first 34 chapters, about an entire third of the book about a boy on a boat, was about his life before he got on a boat. I really enjoyed his unique perspective on life, and of course, religion. But the part that I really wanted to talk about that I haven't seen people talk about much was the very first thing in the book: the authors note.
Many people discuss the ending, and what really happened, but the biggest shock for me wasn't that the true story was just like quantum mechanics and has two realities, but rather that the story wasn't true at all. I know I probably could have figured out that it wasn't true; it is a Novel about a boy stranded in the Pacific that no one seems to talk about outside of the book, but the authors note honestly had me tricked until the end. He started out with an authors note which he made up, and mixes in italicized portions meant to seem like his experiences with real people, so because I knew nothing about this book besides that it was recommended, I thought this was a true story. I did assume it was spruced up, and his story was more of a direct inspiration that was made more dramatic, but I had no clue it was totally fictitious.
But I think I enjoyed it more that way. It let me become immersed in the story in ways that I wouldn't have been otherwise. For example when reading the interview at the end between the shipping company and Pi. I didn't read the introductory text as a fictitious explanation for it, but rather proof it was real, which made it that much more fun to read. Yet somehow the authors note ended up less true than the "based on a true story" tags put in movies. When I found out, I was flabbergasted. I suppose I felt a little betrayed. I may never trust an authors note again.
TL;DR I enjoyed the book, I really enjoyed the first third, and the rest was great too, and it was much more fun to read while believing it was truly real. What are your thoughts?
