Australia’s National Environmental Protection Agency has approved an extension of BHP Mitsubishi Alliance’s Saraji mine in Queensland, allowing a further 55 million tonnes of metallurgical coal to be extracted until 2055. 🏭
The decision is the new regulator’s first approval of a coal project since it began operating on 1 July. Saraji supplies steelmaking coal from the Bowen Basin, near Dysart.
The approval includes conditions intended to protect threatened species and water resources. Reported application figures included clearing of koala, ornamental snake, squatter pigeon and Brigalow woodland habitat. 🌿
A Climate Council adviser estimated that using the additional coal would produce about 120 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over the mine’s life. Environmental groups also raised concerns about species habitat and water quality in the Fitzroy River catchment.
The regulator’s conditions now govern the approved project, while the company’s compliance and the treatment of emissions from exported coal will remain central issues as mining continues.
