Can I offer private tutoring as a foreigner in Germany ?
Hello everyone,
I am a non-EU resident (an Ausländerin) with a PhD in Information Science + journalism, currently based in Baden-Württemberg. I have been applying for industry jobs but haven’t had much luck yet. Therefore I am exploring the possibility of offering private English tutoring (Nachhilfe).
I reached out to the Ausländerbehörde, and this is what they said:
„**Ob Sie für die Anbietung von Dienstleistungen ggf eine Gewerbeanmeldung benötigen, kann von ausländerrechtlicher Seite nicht beurteilt werden**.“
Basically, I am allowed to pursue self-employment, but whether to register myself as a business for offering services cannot be determined from an immigration law perspective.
I am a bit unsure about how to proceed from a practical/legal point of view. Therefore I would appreciate any guidance that you all have to offer.
Would private tutoring be considered freiberufliche or require a Gewerbe registration?
Any other specific permits/registrations that I need to be aware of?
Has anyone else on here gone through a similar process as a foreigner?
