A teacher walked into the classroom and took a banknote out of his pocket. He held it up in front of the students and asked:
βWho wants this banknote?β
All the students raised their hands.
Then the teacher crumpled the banknote tightly until it was covered with wrinkles and asked:
βWho still wants it?β
The students raised their hands again.
Then the teacher dropped it on the floor and stepped on it with his shoe. He picked it up, and it was now dirty and crumpled.
He asked:
βAnd now, who still wants it?β
All the students raised their hands.
The teacher smiled and said:
βThe banknote has become wrinkled and dirty, but its value has not changed.β
Then he looked at his students and said:
βYou are the same. You may go through difficult times in life. You may experience failure, make mistakes, or hear hurtful words from others. You may even feel that you have lost your worth.β
Then he added:
βBut always remember: your true worth is not determined by what happens to you or by what other people say about you.β
