They want to talk like us, walk like us, live like us…

They want to talk like us, walk like us, live like us.

Before reading, know that this is not the full story, i simply do not have the time to tell you guys everything in one go.

Thats all.

Years ago, when i was around 13, i vividly remember sitting right next to my little brother during dinner, eating quietly as my mother and father talked about work. We were eating pesto pasta, i had just gotten a haircut earlier in the day and it was a saturday wich i was particularly exited for considering i had to go to the water park with my friends on sunday. The reason i remember this scene so well, however, isnt because of the quality time i spent with my family, but its because of something that was said on the news. I recall hearing the lady on TV talk about a man killed by, and i quote, "Something that looked like a person" before explaining where and when it happened. I shook my head slightly and my brow furrowed in confusion, i wondered if i had heard that right, but when i looked around the table to see if my family had heard it too, my mother and father weren't paying any attention to the TV and my brother was attempting to tie a knot with a piece of spaghetti, making a mess before being stopped by mom after a minute of trying and failing.

"Maybe i just heard it wrong..."

I thought to myself, brushing it off as nothing more than a silly misunderstanding before going back to eating.

But, as you can tell by me writing this, the memory stuck with me for years, its one of those memories that i could go back to and revisit at any point in my life.

Anyways, I lived in a small town, small enough for everyone to know eachother, but big enough to have everything necessary for the people living in it.

One day, about a month after that news report, my mother had given me 10 bucks to buy some eggs at the supermarket, telling me i could buy something for myself with the change. I bought the eggs just as she told me, and got myself a can of sprite, alongside a prepackaged ham and cheese sandwich, before walking out the store and beginning to walk back home with a satisfied smile on my face, the sun hitting my eyes for a split second, making me squint and turn my head down to the ground.

I was kicking a pebble along the road back home, the sound of clicking against the sidewalk was oddly satisfying, soothing even, but that feeling was interrupted by the pebble hitting someone's shoes infront of me.

A bit startled, I look up, the brightness of the sun hitting my face again before i block the sunlight with my hand.

"Ah!- Sorry! I wasnt looking..."

As the figure infront of me comes into focus, i take a good look at her and my breath catches in my throat for a short moment.

I had never seen this person before, she was an old woman, maybe in her late 70s, she had a big nose, long grey hair, and as she looked at me, her eyes didnt focus on me immediatly, in fact, i could've sword she looked crosseyed for a second!

She was covered from head to toe in warm, heavy clothing, she looked like she had opened the closet and put everything she had on, despite the sun hitting particularly hard that day.

At first glance, she looked like any other old woman, but there was something about her, a few things in fact, that made her, for lack of a better word, unsettling.

Her nose was a little too big, she had wrinkles on her face that i had never seen on anyone else's, the way her eyes took a second to properly lock onto me, she even smelled weird, like the cork of an old wine bottle that had turned to vinegar.

After about two seconds of silence, she smiles, raisisng her hand to my cheek and pinching it before finally saying something...

"Ooh! How are you, im fine! Today is a beautiful day! The weather is so nice!"

Her voice was high pitched and weak, but what confused me the most was the fact that, none of what she said made sense. I was expecting "Its alright, dont worry!" or maybe "Be more careful next time!" or even "Watch where you're going, young man!", not whatever this is, it was like she trying to have small talk with me without giving me the time to even open my mouth.

"Ah, yeah, uhm, it is a nice da-"

I stopped talking as she began walking past me, almost as if ignoring my attempt at a conversation entirely

"How's work these days? I feel great today! can you pass me a lighter?"

And so, she walks away at an incredibly slow pace.

I take a deep breath and shake my head, smiling a little at the bizarre exchange, if you could even call it one.

I continue walking home, taking a sip of my sprite and leaving the pebble behind, having forgotten about it.

As soon as i get there, i hear mom's voice from the kitchen.

"Sweetie? is that you? did you buy the eggs like i asked you to?"

I walk in the kitchen, placing the eggs on the counter and grabbing the sandwich i had bought earlier.

"Yup."

Mom walks up to me and ruffles my hair, and i respond by quickly moving away from the hand and complaining, cause, you know, i was 13 and i thought i didnt need my mother's affection anymore.

"Thank you sweetie, i'll bake us a cake whenever i have the time, how's that sound?"

Despite my defiance, i cant help but light up at the idea.

"Alright... sounds good, mom."

I suddenly think back at my encounter with that old woman and decide to ask her about it, after all, im pretty sure both mom and dad know almost everyone in town.

"Oh, uhm, mom? do you know by any chance an old lady with a really big nose?"

"I met her when i was walking back home, but i didnt recognize her, so..."

Mom looked at me for a second, then she tilted her head to the side slightly, looking up at the ceiling in thought.

"Hmm, i know some old men with big noses, not ladies."

"Why? did she tell you something?"

She leans against the kitchen counter and looks at me, raising an eyebrow, wondering who this person might be.

"Nothing important, just old people talk, yknow, the weather and stuff."

I dont tell her everything, partially because i didnt want to sit there and end explain to her in detail about how she looked, talked and behaved, and partially because it didnt really make sense anyways.

"Hm, alright hun, you can ask dad when he comes back from work... Be careful when talking to strangers, you know i always tell you that."

"Yeah yeah, i know i know..."

As she turns around and puts the eggs on top of the fridge, i walk to the livingroom couch with my brother, sitting beside him and grabbing the remote to turn on the TV.

"You wanna watch gumball?"

he simply looks at me and nods, smiling with glee.

"Alright..."

I turn it on with cartoons in mind, but somehing else catches my attention.

The news were talking about an arrest that happened earlier today in a nearby city, a man with severe physical deformities stood motionless in the middle of a busy street for 10 minutes before police was called. he was forcefully moved and arrested by the officers called on the scene shortly after.

When interrogated, the man would only speak in gibberish, the cops barely able to make out a word from what he was saying.

The man also lacked any type of ID.

The people of said city, when asked if they had ever seen that man before all said no. Not one person who was interrogated knew where that man came from.

I stare at the TV, both interested and a bit uneasy, that sounded familiar, too familiar.

Then again, the lady i had met wasnt as bad. Yeah, she had an unusual face and she was kind of just talking for the sake of talking, But that could all be chalked up to her old age, maybe she was sick, who knows!

But the fact neither my mom nor i recognize her from anywhere just rubbed me the wrong way...
