In the year 1670, the Maharana of Udaipur built the Rana Mahal Ghat at the bank of the River Ganga. Approximately eighty six ghats encompass the river bank at Benaras but the sheer architecture and grandeur of Rana Mahal sets it apart from the others. The ornate Rajputi architecture is a reminder of Rana Jagat Singh of Udaipur’s great vision and foresight. Today, however, what was once a Mahal are a row of hotels. Visitors from all over the world come to the Ghat as its sheer proximity to the Dasaswamedh Ghat, where the Maha Aarti takes place, makes it a convenient pitstop. As tourists flock in to lodge here and children learn to swim, the peace and charm of the majestic Mahal is lost.
