💼 🇺🇸🇨🇦 The United States and Canada said on Wednesday, August 19, that they were moving toward a trade agreement that could avert threatened 50% U.S. tariffs on about $20 billion in Canadian imports. The terms had not been finalized or publicly detailed.

The tariffs were paused for three days shortly before they were to take effect and were then scheduled for 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, August 22. The targeted imports equal about 5% of Canadian exports to the United States.

📰 The proposed duties arose under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, an authority the Associated Press reported had not previously been used to impose tariffs. The measures could cover goods including some building and agricultural products, while major energy imports and motor vehicles were excluded.

Canada said an emerging agreement would protect dairy supply management and jobs at risk from the new tariffs. Ottawa also asked provincial leaders to return U.S. alcohol to store shelves, though provincial governments control those sales.

A finalized arrangement could reduce the immediate risk of escalation and help clear the way for broader talks on the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement. Details on tariff relief, concessions and implementation remained unresolved.
