Amazing Rings Around Uranus
This new image from JWST reveals the rings, polar vortex, and many of its 27 moons.
Because of the planet’s 98° tilt, the rings are now facing Earth, and the opposing pole faces a 21-year winter with no sunlight. So, the seasons are extreme. Here we can see bright storms near the seasonal North polar cap, facing us and the sun. It's a hazy halo of aerosols that hang high in the atmosphere of the gas giant — the center of a huge cyclonic vortex, warmer than its dark collar.
The imager on JWST captured fours bands of infrared (1.4, 2.1, 3.0 and 4.6µm), allowing us to peer through the outer haze to the inner beauty of Uranus.
