The US Food and Drug Administration has approved updated COVID-19 vaccines targeting the XFG variant for the 2026–27 season. 💉 Manufacturers said the decision allows doses from Moderna, Novavax-Sanofi and Pfizer-BioNTech to begin shipping to pharmacies and doctors’ offices.
XFG is a SARS-CoV-2 recombinant lineage descended from LF.7 and LP.8.1.2. The FDA advisory committee had recommended a monovalent vaccine based on the JN.1-lineage XFG variant in May.
WHO surveillance reported that XFG was the most prevalent variant among submitted global sequences in the week ending 12 July, at 28%. WHO has classified it as a variant under monitoring and says available evidence does not indicate an additional public-health risk relative to other circulating variants.
Eligibility for younger people with high-risk conditions differs by product, while all three updated vaccines are approved for people 65 and older. 🏥 WHO and health authorities will continue monitoring sequencing, vaccine performance and severity data as the season begins.
