Hurricane Polo made landfall early Tuesday in Baja California Sur, Mexico, as a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 110 mph (175 km/h). 🌪️
The National Hurricane Center said Polo came ashore just south of Las Barrancas after weakening from Category 3 strength on Monday. Forecasters warned of flash flooding, mudslides and 6–12 inches of rain in parts of the state. 🌧️
Ahead of landfall, high tides and waves flooded parts of Puerto San Carlos, and hundreds of people evacuated to shelters. Authorities closed ports and prepared emergency support; Sonora suspended nonessential activities in its capital and more than a dozen municipalities.
Polo was forecast to cross the Gulf of California toward Sonora and weaken rapidly inland. Its remnants could also bring heavy rain and flooding risk to parts of the U.S. Southwest later in the week.
