Weird pulsing star while watching Perseids?

I'm sad that my description will be so poor. I was watching for Perseids near Marengo, IN about 00:44 local time (EDT) when I & friends saw a dozen or more pulses from a fixed point in the sky. Magnitude peaked a bit less than Polaris, but probably over 4. The "star" was invisible at the low points of these pulses, at least to me. Location was about 3 fists at arm's length westward of the 2 southernmost bright stars of Cassiopiea (used them as pointers). About the same distance, maybe a bit more from Polaris.

Anyone know what we saw?
