I’m a conservative Jew who is also a certified professional recovery coach and in recovery from alcohol addiction myself.
I am working with an organization as a sponsor and of course they have planned a rather large event on Rosh.
They have asked me to speak and tell my story, which Judaism is a huge part of my recovery. My slot would be after services and literally right across the street from my shul, like I step out of my shul and can see where the event is being held.
I will not be paid for the event but I will potentially generate business and networking opportunities from speaking there, but I am also potentially reaching about 150 addicts and alcoholics and potentially, quite literally, saving someone’s life that day. That’s not hyperbole in the age of fentanyl.
I will not be working a table but my information will be out for distribution.
My question is should I do it?
ETA: As of today I am now on the steering committee as of 5 minutes ago and will be ensuring that moving forward they uphold their commitment to diversity when it comes to these issues.
ETA 2: If I am observant enough to even be asking the question, I am of course observant enough to ask my rabbi. I'm looking for other people's input. #religion source
