Pulling my hair out with restarting Webasto diesel heater
The issue: Webasto diesel heater keeps restarting, heat going on and off
My setup: Webasto Air Top 2000 ST Diesel 12V Mounted underneath campervan Burner inlet 50cm tube + air filter Burner outlet dual muffler 30cm 60mm hose on main air inlet, pulling air from outside, no kinks 1m 60mm insulated hose on main air outlet, going through bulkhead in the floor, no kinks Webasto fuel pump with damper hooked into main diesel tank, no bubbles in fuel line Webasto Rheostat control Webasto internal temperature sensor Victron Orion 24/12-20 non-isolated (12.5V out non adjustable)
Symptoms Starts up fine, itty bitty white smoke then colourless, nice and hot air inside Dies down, heat slowly decreases, goes to cold air, winds all the way down Starts back up with full heat Repeat NO ERROR MESSAGES :(
What I've done so far Redid all the 60mm air lines, made it a lot shorter and removed some kinks, this seems to make the cycle of starting up and shutting down a lot longer Opened it up, no soot buildup at all Changed to low CO2 setting (I'm >7000ft altitude now) Tested at half power (longer startup and restart cycle) Checked for power sag but constant 12.5V from the Orion Checked all the thermal sensors, glowplug, fuel pump etc for correct resistance, all good
Hypothesis 1: Unit is f'ed, everything around it works fine so must be the unit. Maybe software settings are wrong or electronics is faulty somehow.
Hypothesis 2: Unit is overheating on the output side, it fails to regulate with full fan power so will just go into a cooling cycle. Webasto expects a higher voltage than 12.5V. With for instance \~14V (engine running battery voltage), the fan has 12% more voltage ~~to use 12% more current~~ and so can push ~~(1.12\*1.12=) 25~~ 12% harder. That might eliminate the overheating issue?
