🦠 South Australian authorities have confirmed H5N1 bird flu in a dead common dolphin found near Goolwa on the Fleurieu Peninsula, the first reported Australian dolphin detection.
The finding extends Australia’s documented H5N1 cases beyond birds and follows detections in long-nosed fur seals and a red fox. Officials said the dolphin probably ate or closely interacted with an infected wild bird.
A federal risk assessment rates common dolphins at high risk of severe population declines where the virus takes hold. Authorities say the detection does not establish mammal-to-mammal transmission in Australia.
Australia still has no H5 detections in poultry or its agricultural production system, and the federal government says the risk to human health remains low. Samples from the dolphin were sent for further analysis. 🐬
