Buying our first van clarification about tax? I have moved…

Buying our first van clarification about tax?

I have moved to the US a while back from the United Kingdom and me and my wife (US citizen) are looking into buying our first van and going full time.

She didn’t pay for her car as it was bought for her by her parents when she was younger and has been going for years so buying a vehicle in the US is new to both us.

From what AI is telling me, we pay like 9-10 percent tax on buying even a used van when we transfer ownership to ourselves?

I would just like to clarify but would I be right in thinking that if we buy a used Ram Promaster 2500 for example for 35,000 USD, that we will pay around 3.5k just to register it to us?

This seems insane to me as we don’t do this in the UK. If you buy a used vehicle there is no sales tax. I just wanted to make sure this is right so we can factor this into our estimated cost.

Also, if anyone here is in California, would you mind sharing how much you’re paying for insurance for your van as a full timer and what company you’re with?
